Overview:
Having the opportunity to work on a storied esport like Overwatch was an honor to be a part of. It was one of the first competitive circuits I would follow online and see updates on regularly in mainstream media as well as within the gaming community. In 2024, Overwatch’s esports league reformed as the Overwatch Champions Series, and held a worldwide Major in Dallas at DreamHack as well as the World Finals in DreamHack Stockholm, both of which I would assume the role of content producer. Deliverables to be produced and directed included: Team Heroshots at both events, Event B-Roll coverage in Stockholm, and broke barriers with our head-to-head videos for each team matchup. We were especially excited about the use of the video headshots and integrating them into the in-venue experience. Each player had 10 seconds to give us their favorite poses and they were displayed as emotes when they arose victorious in a match or were introduced to the stage. The head-to-head matchup videos was an ambitious but rewarding piece that built the tension between two teams and their upcoming match. Much of the event b-roll coverage made it into our Grand Finals Hype Video, which was a beautiful piece to tie everything on the line together. The team worked tirelessly to bring this show together and always had our best foot forward.
Deliverables:
Team Heroshots, Player Video Headshots, Head-To-Head Matchup Videos, Event B-Roll Coverage
Collaborators:
Blizzard Entertainment, ESL FACEIT Group, Esports Engine, Joe Brady, MShot Studio
Challenges:
Among the usual obstacles of a complicated media day, we encountered our own. The heroshot set at Dallas was at a location separated from the venue, so the challenge was getting players where they needed to be safely and promptly. When we were in Stockholm, Sweden, we found that creating head-to-head matchup videos was a crunch down to the last minute. We actually created a version of the head-to-head matchups for every possible combination of teams! With 8 teams, that ended up with a total of 56 videos, plus an additional 8 for a Day 1 special twist. We threw everything we had at the massive content delivery for the World Finals and couldn’t be prouder of the results.
